Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

Information related to The Grand Mauritian community and environmental projects:

UNICEF:

Check Out For Children gives every guest at Starwood Hotels the opportunity to support UNICEF's work by adding US $1 (or its equivalent in another currency) to their bill. Materials produced by UNICEF containing information about the program are presented to guests at various points during their stay in a Starwood Hotel. A special feature outlining the benefits of Check Out For Children is also available to guests through Starwood's Guest TV Channel.

Donations from Check Out For Children have helped to immunize over one million children in countries such as India, Zimbabwe, Peru, Georgia, Iraq, Ethiopia, China, Gambia and Gabon.

Cash for cookies:

Guest can pick a cookie from the dispenser located in the lobby and give his/her cash contribution as a donation to UNICEF.

Calebasses Home (Ashram) for elderly persons:

The hotel participates in the refurbishment of the sports and entertainment area of the Calebasses Hone, including wall repainting, new floor tiles and lunch for the residents.

SOS Children's village:

The hotel celebrated Mother's day with the residents of this orphanage and lunch offered to them. Once a week our chef goes there and offers cooking and pastry classes.

Pointe aux Piments village:

This future project is to provide for unemployed persons in the village of Pointe aux Piments and assist them in finding a job at The Grand Mauritian or at any other resort with vacancies.

The Marine Park:

The Grand Mauritian coastline is adjacent to one of the only two marine nature parks in Mauritius. The Marine Park, bordered by a reef running the length of the hotel coastline, is full of indigenous fish including star fish, grouper fish, grunt fish, lion fish, angel fish and cat fish. There is also an abundance of coral, mostly Black Coral. As this delicate ecosystem can easily be disturbed by boats, all watersports such as waterskiing will take place outside the boundaries of the marine park itself.
