Since the Island is a multi ethnic society with several religious belief, the various celebrations form part of many Mauritius events through out the year. These events add to an already interesting and colourful island. Most of the festivals in Mauritius have a religious background. Others are considered as traditions to which Mauritians are deeply concerned in preserving, particularly among the younger generation. With time, some of them have changed accordingly though their meanings have stayed concrete. Some have even become public holidays as a sign of respect for the devotees. The main event, the Gran Konser, which gathers thousands of Mauritians overnight, will be held December 5 in Les Salines, Port Louis. This year is the Jamaican singer Shaggy who is the Guest Star of the Festival.
